OPENGROUND TEACHER PROFILE

Mark Baxter

MSBR teacher, psychologist and psychotherapist, psychedelic medicine therapist.

How I came into teaching mindfulness

I started my mindfulness meditation journey in 2001 with a weekend workshop at the Nan Tien Buddhist Temple in Wollongong.  Having finished a psychology degree, I was struck by how one of the most important and powerful psychological methods in history wasn’t included at all in the training. After dabbling in Buddhist Psychology for many years alongside my work as a practicing psychologist, I decided to undergo training to become an MBSR teacher. I facilitated my first class in 2013 and enjoyed witnessing the journey of participants as they discovered a radical new way to relate to themselves, others and the world.

Specialisation

I am deeply interested in integrative ways to heal the mind and body and over the past 8 years have also been studying psychedelic-assisted therapies. I have completed the Certificate of Psychedelic Assisted Therapies (CPAT) as well as the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) MDMA-assisted therapy training. I am currently working as a MDMA-assisted and psilocybin-assisted therapist with Evolution Medicine Enhanced Therapy based at Northern Beaches Hospital, and Tikvah Centre for Eating Disorder Recovery in Sydney.

Teaching Philosophy
My teaching style is relatable, pragmatic and empathic – while still embracing the sacred and the silly, the magic and the mundane. Through experience, I have seen how mindfulness meditation can help people understand their own mind, transform stress and suffering, increase self-awareness and improve relationships.
