What makes an MBSR teacher

Every OpenGround MBSR teacher has:

  • In-depth training and supervision in MBSR teaching
  • Extensive meditation and retreat experience
  • Commitment to ethical practice and to reducing suffering in the world
  • Deep interest in other human beings

Qualifications alone don't make a great teacher. What participants consistently describe is teachers who show up as whole people - vulnerable, real, genuinely interested in each person's experience, and able to hold space for difficulty without rushing to fix it.

How teachers support you specifically

Before your first class, you'll speak with your teacher one-on-one. This conversation helps your teacher understand:

  • What brings you to MBSR
  • What challenges you're managing
  • What you're hoping might change
  • What obstacles might arise for you specifically
  • Whether any adaptations might help

This isn't assessment or screening. It's your teacher beginning to know you as an individual and together checking out if the course is right for you.

During the course your teacher will:

  • Track your individual experience across the eight weeks
  • Offer specific adaptations if practices aren't working for your situation
  • Create space for your questions and struggles
  • Notice when you're pushing too hard or avoiding altogether
  • Respond to what's actually arising for you, not just a standardised curriculum

You also have access to your teacher between sessions via email if questions or difficulties arise.

Teacher supervision and support

What you might not see: every week, your teacher meets with colleagues for peer supervision. They're thinking about the group, about individual participants, about how to support specific challenges that emerged. This isn't just one person - it's a community of teachers supporting each other to serve you well.

  • "The thing that struck me most was how much my teacher seemed to actually see me as an individual, not just another participant."

  • "I've had therapists and doctors and other practitioners, but my MBSR teacher was somehow different - present in a way that's hard to describe but easy to feel."

  • "My teacher made me feel safe to struggle. That was everything."

  • "Exceptional teaching."
