This Privacy Policy applies specifically to the OpenGround mobile app (available on iOS and Android), published by Openground - the Australian Centre for Mindfulness and Compassion.

It explains how we collect, use, store, retain, share, and delete your personal information when you use the OpenGround app.

By using the OpenGround app, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

1. Information we collect

Through the OpenGround app, we collect the following categories of personal information:

Account information - name, email address, and password (stored in encrypted form) when you create an account in the app.

Profile information - details you choose to provide as part of your profile.

Engagement data - sessions you complete, meditation tracking, reflection data, and progress within the app.

Technical and device information - device type, operating system, app version, crash logs, and basic analytics required to operate and improve the app.

We do not collect sensitive health information through the app. Journal entries are private to you and are not accessible by Openground or anyone else.

2. How we use your information

We use the personal information collected through the OpenGround app to:

  • Provide access to app features and content
  • Send app-related notifications and reminders
  • Provide user support
  • Improve app functionality, content, and user experience
  • Comply with legal obligations

3. How we share your information

We do not sell your personal information. We only share data collected through the app in these limited circumstances:

  • Service providers - trusted third parties who help us operate the app (e.g. cloud hosting, email delivery, analytics, crash reporting). These parties are contractually required to protect your data.
  • Research partners - where you have given your explicit, informed consent, we may share de-identified information with academic, clinical, or research partners conducting evidence-based mindfulness research. You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us at info@openground.com.au, and any future sharing will stop.
  • Legal requirements - where required by Australian law, court order, or to protect our legal rights.
  • With your consent - for any other purpose, only with your express permission.

4. Data storage and security

Data collected through the OpenGround app is stored on secure servers operated by reputable cloud providers. We use industry-standard technical and organisational measures - including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), access controls, and authentication safeguards - to protect your information from unauthorised access, loss, or misuse.

5. Data retention

We retain your personal information only for as long as is necessary for the purposes outlined in this Privacy Policy, or as required by law. Specifically:

  • Account data - retained while your account is active. If you do not log into the app for 24 months, your account may be marked inactive and scheduled for deletion.
  • Engagement data - retained while your account is active and deleted alongside your account.
  • Crash logs and technical analytics - retained for up to 12 months.

After the relevant retention period, your data is securely deleted or irreversibly anonymised.

6. Data deletion

You have the right to request deletion of your personal information at any time. There are two ways to do this:

Option 1 - In-app deletion (OpenGround app):

  1. Open the OpenGround app and sign in.
  2. Go to Profile then Delete Account
  3. Confirm the deletion.

Your account and associated personal data will be deleted within 30 days of the request.

Option 2 - Email request: Email us at info@openground.com.au with the subject line "Data deletion request" from the email address associated with your account. We will action your request within 30 days and confirm deletion in writing.

Please note: Some information may be retained after deletion where we are legally required to keep it. Where this applies, we will tell you what has been retained and why. The retained information will not be used for any active purpose and will be securely deleted once the legal retention period ends.

7. Your other privacy rights

In addition to deletion, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you
  • Correct information that is inaccurate or out of date
  • Lodge a complaint with the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at www.oaic.gov.au if you believe your privacy rights have been breached.

8. Third-party services

The OpenGround app may use third-party services for analytics, crash reporting, and authentication (such as Google Sign-In or Apple Sign-In, where applicable). These services have their own privacy policies, which we encourage you to review.

9. Changes to this Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect any changes. For material changes, we will notify users via email or in-app notice.
